Mani Pedi First

For the longest time I've been wanting to try a pedicure. Before my birthday hit, I was thinking about treating myself on my birthday, but forfeited the idea after thinking about it. But a month later my friend messages me and asked me if I knew where to get a pedicure. Now I had already done some research on pedicure places on google, when I was thinking about going. I finally decided on Pure Nail Bar, but in the end didn't go. It was the easiest for me to get to, and the price was acceptable. (Pedi @ $35 and Mani Pedi @ $50). So I told my friend about it, and asked if I could tag along, to avoid the awkwardness of sitting there by myself, having someone touch my feet. My friend decided to opt for the mani pedi combo, because it was only 20 dollars more, so I went alone with it.

Now, normally I wouldn't spend a dime doing a manicure, because I can do that easily myself, and truth be told, I think I did a better job than the girl that did mine for me. Anyways...enough bsing, on with the pictures! I took these with my cell phone, so the quality is lacking a bit (bit it is a 5MP camera though). I only took pictures of the pedicure, because I couldn't hold my phone while getting my manicure done...but I have end results!

so we started off with a soaking first, the water was a bit hotter then lukewarm, and was actually very relaxing, even on a hot summer's day.

and we got to pick our own toe and hand colour. I forgot to take a picture of the colours I picked (actually we both picked the same colours LOL) But you can see it on the end product. The polish we picked were both Essie, and my friend went to get the green bottle on the same day. I liked the green, but could not fork over $10 to buy it.

Then the lady cleaned my cuticles, and gave me a scrub down

CLEAN FEET! I am fairly self-conscious about my feet, they are so chubby and wide...I hate them without shoes on LOL

Then she gave me the polish.

done feet!

finished product (both hand and feet) my friend did the opposite colour, she had blue on her toes and green on her hand. I really like the green colour, I don't have a colour like that, but my mom said the colours I picked are ugly (I think it's just something she's not use to looking at on nails). I picked blue and green because I dont have colours like that, most of the cheaper nail colours are the normal reds and pinks, even purples have more of a reddish tone purple then any blues or greens. And I am falling in love with the flat nail colours, they are just so much more vibrant!

My finger nails started peeling after 2 days, and I could see bubbles in the polish after she had finished it..not very pleased with that. The toes were fine though, I think it was just that girl who did my hands wasn't as good as the other lady that did my feet. She didn't do a very good job of shaping my nails either. Plus I do a lot of house work, so my hands get soaked in water/chemicals quite a lot. In any case I would never pay for another manicure. Pedicure, maybe.

The total came to $56 after tax, and I did not give any tips, because that was a bit much for my dinky salary. Although I must mention, they were pretty good with hygiene, they opened up a pack of sterile nail clippers and cuticle trimmers for every customer, so no one is sharing germs.

That is all. Until next time live well and shop LOTS! :)

All about the BB Creams

Pre-post babble: so this is my 3rd attempt at this post. The first 2 failed because after I typed out the long BB cream reviews, I accidentally lost them due to my own stupidity (let's not talk about how stupid I am...) hopefully this will be my last attempt (actually not planning to post anymore if this one fails too). Here goes nothing (yet again!)
_________________________________________________
After discovering the wonderfulness that is BB cream, I am hooked!

First, let's start off with some background. BB cream stands for Blemish Balm cream. It's originally formulated for post-laser surgeries to help heal and cover up scars or other blemishes on sensitive skin. It is widely used in Asian countries such as Japan and Korea, and is growing in popularity in Taiwan.

Now some background for me and base make up. I've never liked using foundation or any sorts of base make up, for the longest time I've only used concealer to conceal things I do not like on my face. I've tried tinted moisturizer from Marcel, which did not work for me (not enough coverage). Then I went back to concealer only, but I was pretty much putting concealer all over my face, and it was getting annoying trying to dab on every blemish I have. Then I tried mineral foundation from Everyday Minerals. I liked it until winter hit, and my skin started drying up and flaking. So last year in Dec I finally gave in to liquid foundation and purchased Make-up Forever's Face & Body foundation. It was hella expensive at $42 per bottle, good thing I had a $20 coupon from Sephora, so I only paid $22. I loved the foundation and all, but the Face&Body was quite thin and did not do much coverage of blemishes, it did however, even out my skin tone. Another con was that it floated by the end of the day, on my forehead and where the nose piece of my glasses sits. And so comes the BB cream. I always wondered about BB creams, but never knew where to get them. They aren't very easily available. And BB cream was actually the reason that I got in to internet shopping....so I ordered my first BB cream (L'egere White Multi) from imomoko.com

After discovering BB cream and all it's wonderfulness, I've been venturing out to try different brands. So my newly obtained BB cream is from Skin Food Mushroom Multi.

I won't go into too much about this bb cream, I'll be comparing all of them later on in the post.

suppose it's got 3 different functions: whitening, anti-ageing and sun protection (SPF 20). I don't know about the whitening and anti-ageing functions..it's only been a few weeks.

wish I can read Korean!

sealed up tight, pretty hygienic!

Anyways! on to the topic at hand (after so much bs)...LOL
So these are all the BB creams I own.

It may look like I have 7 different kinds, I actually only have 6. There's a duplicate in there that I did not realize until I started typing up the names of the BB cream (they really need to make the packaging the same...it's all very confusing). The duplicate one is the silver tube and white tube, they are both L'egere White Multi.

Enough with the babbling, here's the list of the bb creams, and my initial (or not so initial) feelings about them.
From left to right, and back row then front row:

1. Skin Food Mushroom Multi
Price: I got this one on Ebay for $13 almost $14, there are also other sellers, the prices are between $13 to $15, the one I saw was the cheapest
volume: 50g
SPF 20
This is the cheapest bb cream I own and my current favourite. The consistency is a bit creamy, but not thick like the L'egere White Multi. It covers pretty well, covering most blemishes, but can't cover big pimples. It's got a pretty noticeable pink undertone to it, which is perfectly fine for me, although I do have a yellow undertone, but since this one is not thick the colour difference is not that big. The only thing that might bother people is the smell of this cream. It's a pretty strong grassy smell, it doesn't bother me that much, but it might bother people who don't like scents. The one I got is shade 2, and I am actually curious about shade 1, suppose it's got a yellow under tone to it, so it might be better for me. But I will resist until I finish most of my bb creams.

2. Skin79 Super+
SPF 25
Price: Again I got this on ebay, I believe almost $15...I don't recall the other seller's prices but definitely nothing over $20
volume: 40g
I got this because my friend, who had purchased the gold label one, told me she liked it. I also saw Jen from from-head-to-toe used it. It was a BIG disappointment! It was soooo grey, I could not use it. It accentuated all my darker areas, like my under eye circle, I looked like crap. I looked like I had used ash to powder my face...it was insane. In the end I was only able to use this product when I mix it with the L'egere White Multi (which has a red undertone), to make a beige colour, that I could finally use. The consistency of this is slightly more watery then the Skinfood or L'egere. The coverage is minimal

3. L'egere White Multi
Price: $19.99USD @ imomoko.com
Volume: 50g
SPF unknown, but sun protection is listed on the bottle as one of the properties
This was my first bb cream I've ever tried. I loved it when I tried it, then as the day got hotter, I felt it was a bit thick..and really it's very white. I feel like a mime sometimes using this product. Straight out of the tube it actually looks dark, but it's not, it's one of the lightest bb creams I own. The coverage is pretty decent, but again it's quit thick. My skin feels uncomfortable under the hot sun.

4. Skin79 Diamond Prestige (1st little jar from the left)
Price: this is not one I purchased, so I am not sure...
Volume: 40g
SPF 25
My friend gave me some of hers to try out. I only used it once, so this is very initial feeling about this product. The consistency is very watery, and there's no much coverage. However, there's also no colour difference that I can see either. If I hadn't tried the Skinfood first, this would have been my next choice. It evens out skin tone, but cant really cover much of anything, which is a problem for me (too many blemishes on my face). It definitely feels the most like a tinted moisturizer.

5. Skin79 Diamond Absolute Total (2nd little jar)
Price: again not one I bought
Volume: 40g
SPF 37
This is another one that my friend gave me, I only used it once too. The consistency is also watery and very very minimal coverage. It's got a slight grey tone to it, but not as bad as the Super+. I don't know if it's because it's so light or because I used so little, there's not much colour difference when I use this. But just with the amount of coverage, I would not pick this one. The only pro for this one I guess would be the high SPF... but that's never a concern for me, as long as it's over 15 I am fine.

6. L'egere Water Drop Shiny Pearl
Price: $19.99USD @ imomoko.com
Volume: 50g
SPF unknown, but sun protection is listed as a property
This one I got from my friend, she got it as a sample from one of her imomoko orders, but didn't want to try it because she didn't like the White Multi. I was also iffy to try this one because of the colour difference for the White Multi, but I was pleasantly surprised. The consistency is watery, and it was pretty easy to blend. It even out the skin tone, with minimal coverage. The only thing I would be worried about is the shimmeriness of this bb cream, I am not one for glowy looking face.

Now that the reviews are all done and over with, on with the pictures!

I compared my bb creams to my Make up Forever Face and Body foundation. The colour is #20 (Ivory) which is my perfect fit, it's slightly slightly pinkish and has a yellow undertone, which is what I have basically.

let's start with straight out of the tube...

I don't know why I decided to squeeze them out so close together...I hope no one is confused with the names lol. And there's one that's not label (the one on the very top right) that's the L'egere White Multi..so please just ignore it =p

this one you can see the shimmers in the L'egere Water Drop, and because they are touching, it looks like the White Multi also has a bit of shimmer, I assure you it doesn't

and at a different angle....the Super+ looks really grey in this picture...why did I even buy it T_T

here they are slightly blended out, you can see the colours better in these

close up

and here they are blended out.

I've circled and label each spot. The top row first

now bottom row. It may seem like the Super+ suits me best, but my arm does not have any dark circles, and it's about 2 shades lighter then my face...so never trust swatches on the arm or hand! always swatch at the jaw line, and you want to match the neck more so then the face. That being said, my neck is SUPER yellow, so I actually try to be one shade lighter than my neck...I don't want to have a yellow face.

And lastly...

here they are on a sheet of blotting paper, to see how much oil each cream has.
from looking with the naked eye, Skin Food and the Super+ seems to be the most oily.

close up. It's amazing how the MUF has NO oil AT ALL!!.

Well! that's it!

This took me a while to post, I was planning to post this last week, but after typing up half of the post and then loosing it...I cried and got lazy..haha. But better late than never right? Enjoy! and I hope this helped you in finding the right BB cream for you :)

until next time, live well and shop LOTS!!

"The One" that sucked

Woke up early this morning to get my tire patched up, and Kaltire gave it to me on the house. It only costs $26 before tax, not a big amount, but great experience. So less hateful towards the world now. On with the blog at hand.

Today is another food blog. I went to this restaurant with a few friends I haven't seen in a while. This restaurant has the same owner as another more well established restaurant also in Burnaby (老山東 Lao Shan Dong www.laoshandong.com). Just how well established is Lao Shan Dong you asks? Where the restaurant is located (Kingsway and Nelson), Through out the years, I have seen about 4 or 5 restaurants fail because there's no business. Lao Shan Dong has been there for years and years. If you go, I recommend the beef noodles. Anyways, enough about Lao Shan Dong, that's not the restaurant we went to.

The restaurant we actually went to is call "The One" (hence the title). I suppose knowing that it was owned by the same person as Lao Shan Dong, I had higher expectations of its food. Although I suppose even if the owner is the same, the chef is different. I personally love Lao Shan Dong's food, and the prices are very reasonable. On the other hand, the food from The One, was not that great, and IMO a bit over priced for the type of food.

Regardless, I decided to take some pictures and do a blog anyways (just to tell people not to go, haha). The following review is of my own opinion, so please don't come back and tell me the food was good, and I am just a hater. Everyone sees beauty in different ways, and as such thinks different kinds of food is tasty. Although, I must say, I am a born and bred Taiwanese (even though I grew up in Canada), I would think I have more authority in commenting on Taiwanese cuisine. Enough babbling...here goes nothing.

So let's start off with the menu, here's the restaurant's contact information

I normally don't care much for menus, but this one I must say, it is a big giant mess. There's words everywhere, some pages the title of the list is at the bottom of the page while the list it self is in another column on the same page. There's random words of "poetry" every where. I didn't take pictures of the entire menu, but here's a idiotic part of the menu that I found too funny to ignore.

The Chinese actually says something like
"There is a kind of myth that is call a love story; There is a kind of brand that is call the first love."
ok I know that still sounds stupid, but better than "some one kind of..." In any case it sounds stupid in Chinese too. This was the only "poetry" that was translated into English, I mean Chinglish.

Enough about the menu, here's some pictures of food

I ordered a green milk tea, without anything.

It came with a straw (the blue) and (I think) a stir stick (in green). The tea was actually pretty good, not too sweet, but I would prefer more of a tea flavour. I believe the price was $3.75, which is typical for bubble tea in Vancouver, however, knowing it costs 30NT (about a dollar Canadian) in Taiwan I really don't like to pay over $3 for bubble tea.

This is an item I shared with a friend. They called it chicken nuggets. This is probably my favourite street food back in Taiwan. This was one of the better dishes. It was fried pretty perfectly, greasy but not too overwhelming. The chicken was pretty tender, but it could have been bigger. The deep fried basil was a nice touch, I love basil!!

This was one of my friend's meal, 宮保雞丁, basically diced chicken stir fried with chilly, veggies and peanuts. I had a little taste, it was quite salty, probably would have been better with rice. Then again, I am not a big fan of this dish.

Another friend's meal, deep fried chicken on rice. I had a taste of the chicken (everything else is the same as mine). It's basically like a giant piece of the chicken nugget, except it's not a nugget. haha, so this wasn't half bad. The batter had a bit of sweetness to it, which is what I like. If I were to go back to the restaurant I'll probably order this instead. Actually, this WAS my original order, except my friend wanted to taste the pork chop, so I ordered that and shared it with him.

My other friend (the one I shared the pork chop and chicken nuggets with) ordered a lamb hot pot. I also had a taste of this (haha) basically I took a dip in everyone's food. The soup base is not bad, but there's not much of the lamb meat taste to it, I suppose not many people like the smell of lamb, so maybe it's good for others, but I love lamb.

The pot was pretty full of stuff, literally just stuff...there were only a few pieces of lamb meat (those thinly sliced kind). I liked the soup..didn't eat any of the stuff, but my friend said it was only "okay"

look at the pot smoke! The pot came on top of a stove thing. They had a piece of something at the bottom and set it on fire. The one bad thing was that you can't change the heat setting so the hot pot just kept boiling, and the meat gets old if you don't eat fast enough.

Finally my meal came. It's deep fried pork chop with rice, with black pepper and garlic sauce. Another person at the table ordered the same thing with a different sauce. I didn't take a picture of that because he wasn't my friend, he came with another friend of mine. My friend insisted on putting his hands over the pork chop so that there's something to compare it with to see how big it is.

I thought my pooh dressed tigger did a better job as a comparison. Anyways, the idea is "Look how GIANT my pork chop is!"

here's what the thing looks like without things blocking it. It is indeed a giant piece of meat. When I saw it I actually lost my appetite cause it was so huge and greasy looking. It was chopped in to 3, I gave my friend 1/3 of it, and I couldn't finish even 1/3 of it...hahaha it ended up being my dinner for the next night. Ok...so I have quite a lot to say about this dish. The pork chop, yes, it looks giant, but really it's just flattened to make it spread bigger, there was not much actual meat, more batter than anything else. This thing was $11.95 came with some side dishes (up next)...IMO, not worth the money. When I bit into this honk of meat, I tasted grease and crunchy batter, where's the meat?! There's no seasoning to the meat (or I can't taste the seasoning). It wasn't unbearable to eat, but like I said I couldn't even finish 1/3 of it (not because it was so giant).

Here are the side dishes. There's a tomato with egg thing, wayyy too salty, dislike! A deep fried wonton, very crunchy did not have much taste though. The veggie was not salty enough, and was quite bland. The only thing I liked was the pickled radish, very yum, I assume it's because no cooking was required (haha).

This is a side dish a friend of mine ordered, and I took a bite. It's an egg pancake. not that great. The pancake was pretty chewy, but again bland.

Another friend's dish, she arrived late, I did not eat this dish though, I was wayy too full. It's diced pork sauce on rice, looks good enough, but can't be sure.

No, this is not a mountain. It's shaved ice. This is suppose to be the house special. It's got red bean, green bean, peanuts, and taro. The ice was meh (it's ice, whatever) the taro was not cooked enough, it was still hard. The red bean and green bean were not bad, but the peanut was weird. There was no actual peanut, more like blended peanut sauce, very weird.

my other friend saw the shaved ice and wanted one to himself, except he doesn't eat taro or peanuts, so he wanted to replace it with other stuff. The waiter told him he can only replace it with other things that are on the list (ie. red bean and green bean), other things he'll have to pay 50 cents per item. So he replaced the taro and peanuts, with more red bean and green bean (haha)

one thing that impressed me was how clean the washroom was (haha).

The service of this restaurant was ok, depending on which server you get. My friend and I walked in first, stood by the door for about 10 mins, looked around, no one came up to us. There was a guy cleaning something at the counter up front, and a girl was there talking to the guy, turns around, made eye contact with me, then walked away....I was getting annoyed. So finally I walked up to her and said I had made reservations, she didn't say a word turns around, I was about to go RAGE on her, then saw that she was grabbing some menus, and was actually showing us where we are suppose to go (without telling us). There were 2 other servers that serviced us, they were pretty good. In the end when my friend was asking for the bill he put up his hand, and told me the same server (the one that showed us our table) looked at him and turned away AGAIN. So I did not like her, not to mention her shit face ALL the time, would it kill you to crack a smile?

Anyways, all in all, this is definitely not "The One," and yes pun intended. Not something I would recommend. The ambiance is great and all, maybe for drinking tea and chatting, but I would not go there for meals.

RAGE!!!!

Well, all day today (and last night) I was planning to come home tonight and do a blog about the restaurant I went to last night. Except I came home to a flat front tire (I bus to work). So I decided I hate the world today, and I don't feel like writing up a food blog...

I guess this is kind of like a preview post...I am also in the process of collecting pictures of all of my mascara on my lashes (I have about a million tubes of mascara). Since they are all waterproof I won't be able to take pictures all in one day (I'll go blind) so I suppose that's something to look forward to as well.

That's about it for today. The world hates me today, and I hate it Grrr
